British & Commonwealth Benevolent Society, I.A.P.
Synopsis
The British & Commonwealth Benevolent Society addresses the needs of the British and other Commonwealth retirees through its Social Service program, offering financial, legal, and medical assistance, psychological support, referral services, and home and hospital visits.
History
The earliest mention of the British Benevolent Society goes back to 1867 with the influx of many British subjects to Mexico. The original relief society was formed to enable Protestant burials of British subjects and permission was obtained from the Mexican government to purchase a property which became the Tlaxpana cemetery. A chapel was donated by Lord Cowdry (or Mr. Weetman Dickson Pearson), who came out to Mexico for the purpose of developing engineering facilities at the docks of Veracruz.
The original British Benevolent Society of Mexico has existed in its present form, legally constituted under the Institución de Asistencia Privada since 1943, only changing its name to the present The British and Commonwealth Benevolent Society of Mexico in 1976.
Money donated by Lord Cowdry built the first Cowdry Sanatorium in 1922-23 on the present site of the Camino Real Hotel. Lord Cowdry donated money to the British Society, the interest of which is subject to any resident of Mexico might go without medical help.
